NEXT architects has been asked to design the interior of the Holland Boulevard. The Holland Boulevard is the area between Lounge 2 and Lounge 3 behind the passport control gates. This area will be reorganized and transformed, as part of the continuous renewal process of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, in order to increase the passengers’ comfort and ease of traveling. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the biggest and crowdiest airports of Europe. In 2016, the year that the airport celebrates its’ 100-years anniversary, Schiphol expects to welcome 60 million travellers.

Dutch landscape
De design by NEXT architects presents the overall experience of the modern Netherlands; progressive, innovative and with a rich history and heritage. The Schiphol Holland Boulevard has to be an advanced post of all the elements that represent the things we are proud of in The Netherlands. NEXT has shaped this with the straight lines of the Dutch polder landscape, built up with a layered structure, both spatially as well as in atmosphere and material. Within these layers there’s space for diversity and contrast. The landscape consists of several chambers that are separated by low walls and together they form the horizon of the vast area of 5000 sqm. Each chamber has a unique character and personal atmosphere within the Dutch landscape. The chambers are all different from one another, just like the fact that the different cultural and commercial parties that will be located in the renewed Holland Boulevard have a very own characteristic nature. Parties include the Rijksmuseum, the museumshop and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines for which NEXT has made the design.

Actively explore and linger in peace
To travellers, waiting at Holland Boulevard will be a thrilling experience or a temporary retreat. The tight layout of the Dutch landscape make it possible for the little time travellers to get a quick overview of the entire landscape and momentary get acquainted with Holland. On the other hand, there’s a meandering path which makes it possible for travellers to escape the fast flow rate of Schiphol. Travelers who have some more time can stroll through the Dutch landscape and peacefully discover the different places. To make the stay even more pleasant, NEXT has created more than 550 seating areas, including comfortable sleeping spots.
