In 1943 Patrick Abercrombie developed the ‘Potatoe-Plan’: a map of the city of London that includes social and functional analysis to visualise the dense and complex urban agglomerations in so-called potatoes. These are almost self-sufficient city districts.

The 'Potatoe Plan collection' is a research project by Kees Christiaanse at the ETH Zurich (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zurich). Based on Abercrombie’s original Potatoe Plan, the project aims at building a collection of Potatoe-Plans mapping cities around the world. NEXT was asked to contribute to this research project by making a Potatoe Plan for its hometown: Amsterdam.

The book gathering all the Potato Plans was published by nai010 in June 2018:

ISBN 978-94-6208-433-9 | editors: Mirjam Züger, Kees Christiaanse (eds.) | design: Joost Grootens | English | hardcover | 24 x 30 cm | 240 pages | illustrated (300 full color) | in conjunction with: ETH Zurich and various architecture schools, urban designers and architects all over the globe
