Purmerend’s new Tram Square is a place for encounters. For many years, this area around the canal was characterised by a busy motorway, a petrol station, and a cluttered bus station. The construction of the Melkwegbridge and the renovation of Tram Square have transformed this former fringe area into a landmark of the town. The bus station has been completely refurbished and moved to the canal bank, creating a public space by the water.

To prevent the space from turning into a chaotic collection of disparate objects (benches, bins, information boards, etc.), these facilities have been incorporated into the primary elements, making the square a quality public space in which all of the elements speak a common language in terms of materials and detail. The AVIA petrol station was designed in tandem with the covered bicycle shed to provide a comprehensive solution for parking bicycles and refuelling vehicles at the square. By making the bicycle shed underground, it was possible to create an elevated terrace with a view over the water and the square.

Tram Square Purmerend was nominated for the Arie Keppler Prize 2016.
