Urban regions are economically viable if they provide space for people's flows, knowledge and goods. A vital economy also requires diversity, good education, innovation and experimentation. These ingredients land in Cartess and contribute to the new urban economy.

Cartess is a new, progressive green city district in the Carthesiusdriehoek, right in the center of Utrecht. Green living, health, a flowing economy and sustainability are the focal point of the district.

Various energy, waste and other sustainable solutions have been intergrated in the masterplan. Public space has been materialized in a rich and divers manner. Creating different atmospheres in the plan. A subtle grain for the building volumes generates various informal spaces throhought, both in plan and section.

The landscaping concept addresses the various conditions with specific green space designs, linked to the overarching sustainable networks.

The monumental CAB building was once designed by railway construction engineer Sybold van Ravesteyn as a vehicle maintenance building. The building is now given a new life as the heart of the new Cartess district in the Carthesiusdriehoek in Utrecht. The CAB building is a dynamic meeting place for music, creative workspaces and food. On top of the existing building are three new neighborhoods with living and working units, maisonettes, penthouses, connected communal terraces and meeting rooms.

A range of typologies is proposed: from compact studios with shared services to royal apartments with large outside spaces. But also four layer citydwellings and maisonnettes with large terraces located at the park side. This mix of housing types will create a mixed neighborhood and will allow habitants to switch livings within their own neighborhood.
