In 2018, the Frans Hals Museum and De Hallen Haarlem fused into one museum under the name Frans Hals Museum: a museum with two locations and a renewed and distinctive exhibition programme in which historical and contemporary art are shown side by side. As a consequence of this merging and new positioning, both locations needed a major makeover.

Can the concept of the Transhistoric Museum give new energy to the combination of historic, monumental buildings?  How does it create a new context for the building’s materiality, organization and form? What does the structure of the historic buildings tells us when we look at it from a contemporary perspective, and vice-versa? How can we connect the architecture’s present and past to show new perspectives? These were the main questions leading to NEXT’s design for the new Frans Hals Museum.

The design creates a new heart for the building. The entrance is relocated and the ground floor will have a strong public character, with shops and restaurant functions. An open and accessible museum. The new museum route starts directly from the new hall with a view to the inner garden.
