The ‘Greenest Road of Brabant’ is all about connecting: the area, the people and their needs. The 8.5 km provincial is being renewed to increase the viability and accessibility of the ‘N69 Border Corridor’ between the Netherlands and Belgium. We saw this as an opportunity to realize a road with quality and an optimal user experience, embedding the road in the landscape in a natural way. We elaborated the Spatial Quality Plan (SQP) by wUrk into an Integrated Spatial Development Plan at Developed Design level and are involved in its realisation. We implemented optimisations based on the project objectives: spatial quality, design and sustainability in line with the competition entry according to Best Value Procurement.

The new connection will pass valuable and vulnerable agricultural land, forest and natural areas. The qualities and values of the area are the starting point for the design of the N69. The existing (landscape) structures are integrated in the design and strengthened. Ecological connections, including hop-overs for bats and 11 ecological passages for small mammals and amphibians, contribute to the project’s added value.

Artworks, such as bridges and viaducts, constitute one single recognizable family in terms of form and material with a recognizable, sober and slender silhouette. Their integrated design strengthens the experience of the landscape. The 3 footbridges are special artworks. They are connections over the road as well as destinations. The landings are iconic and tell each their own story with the use of (local) bio-based materials.

To achieve the greenest road in Brabant, we must stand at the forefront of sustainability. We have achieved enormous material savings by optimizing the design in relation to the competition requirements. In the realisation, Boskalis uses biofuels and new asphalt technologies - an aspect where real difference can be made. In addition, we integrated solar cells in 2 bridges. Various innovations are applied in the field of circular economy and bio-based materials.

The N69 is realised by Boskalis, in collaboration with NEXT architects, H+N+S Landscape Architects and Mos Ecological Advice and Research. In addition, 25 collaborating parties from the Area Agreement are involved. On 19 December 2018, the realization phase started, consisting of the technical and spatial elaboration as well as the physical realization of the new N69. Construction is estimated to start at the beginning of 2020.
