Station Ede-Wageningen

Gateway to the Veluwe

For the new station concept of Ede-Wageningen core values have been identified; recognizable organization of environmental domain, reception domain, travel domain and residence domain. In one spatial movement, the canopy brings landscape and infrastructure, station, and meadow, and north and south under one roof. Therefore, the station area has a strong landscape character that does justice to the position of Ede-Wageningen station as the Gateway to the Veluwe.

Exploring travel experience

The perception and experience of the traveller is crucial in the functioning of a station. From the station concept of Ede-Wageningen, four core values have been identified for the new rail zone: accessible, human, familiar and characteristic. A familiar organization in environmental domain, reception domain, travel domain and residence domain, come together under one roof. By means of the effortless circuit of the logistics facilities, the station area has a strong landscape character that does justice to the position of Ede-Wageningen station as the Gateway to the Veluwe, the entrance to Ede and the connection with Wageningen.

Connecting the station and landscape

In one spatial movement, the canopy brings landscape and infrastructure, station, and meadow, and north and south under one roof. The canopy forms the accolade above the various functions, ensures differentiation of the various domains, gives direction to the passenger flows, and enhances the experience of the unique location of the station. The arriving and departing travellers encounter a direct relationship with the green environment in which the railway zone is located, which enhances the experience and the routing.

Creating a canopy

The canopy is a very recognizable and proven architectural and functional gesture for a station. The canopy also refers to the forest canopy. A reference that matches the public space and the location of the station. PV cells on the canopy reinforce the analogy with the canopy: here, too, sunlight is converted into energy. To strengthen the orientation, the canopy clearly marks the location where all facilities are located and guides the traveller towards the platforms; the slats support the dominant direction of the walkway connection zone. The alignment of columns, direction of the slats and the direction of stairs and voids all contribute to a clear and logical routing on the one hand and define clear spaces where travellers can meet or wait for their connection.
