Apeldoorn – Azelo A1

Scenic parkway

The A1 is the perfect example of a parkway, a highway through a scenic landscape. Due to the increasing traffic, the road between Apeldoorn and Azelo has been sustainably expanded, combined with the realization of new structures, bridges and wildlife crossings. The subtle connections over and under the road ensure a strong recognizability and contribute to the experience of the A1. The restrained design retains the emphasis on the landscape and guarantees continuity and tranquility over the road.

Exploring landscape perspectives

The A1 between Apeldoorn and Azelo is a special landscape route of approximately 45 kilometers that is known for its scenic appearance and the intersection of a number of characteristic landscape types. It is also an important arterial road between the Randstad, the Stedendriehoek, Twente and the Northern and Eastern European hinterland. The road expansion is a complex task in which the relationship with the landscape plays an important role. The experience of the different landscape types and the view on the landscape from the road user, the surrounding area, and local residents were central to the integration and layout of the A1.

Connecting accentuated intersections

Together with the expansion of the road, new structures, bridges, and wildlife crossings have been realized and a number of existing structures have been adapted. The structures form iconic elements that support the experience of the A1 as a parkway. In order to provide a calm and unambiguous road image, with the emphasis on the landscape, it is crucial to maintain cohesion and unity. The artworks are therefore regarded as a series of self-evident objects that are part of the continuous route of the A1. The emphasis is on careful integration and restrained design to respects the scenic character of the road as a core quality.

At a number of locations, the design of the scenic intersections over and under the A1 has been specialized. To subtly accentuate the wildlife crossings and bicycle viaducts that cross the road, they are covered with wooden slats. In addition, the crossings with streams east of the IJssel have been enhanced with special railings with a metallic gold-coloured coating. The slatted principle is reflected in various locations, ensuring unity and coherence at route level for these specials as well. An extra experience layer is added to the A1 with a characteristic vertical line and a recognizable and cohesive view.

Creating sustainability and spatial quality

This project shows that a road expansion can offer added value for spatial quality, ecology, and sustainability. Sustainability has been maximized by focusing on energy conservation and CO2 reduction through the reuse of asphalt and sustainable energy generation. The realization of bio-diverse verges contributes to the biodiversity in the area and the various ecosystems. The expansion of the A1 is an example of dealing with existing infrastructure while guaranteeing spatial quality.

The project has been tendered on the basis of Best Value. The entire team of experts has sought to optimize the spatial quality, design, and sustainability that were part of the project objectives. The accessibility and safety of the region are central to this. The integral collaboration has been a crucial part for the realisation of this project.
