Bridges bring people together. NEXT’s design for the Sacramento Delta Bridge makes the bridge a catalyst for the future developments of the city. This is done by building upon the existing qualities of the place, including the waterfront of the river delta. A bridge that strongly connects and interacts with the surrounding site to stimulate healthy urban living.

The new bridge will connect the cities of West Sacramento and Sacramento, CA. NEXT architects was invited to participate to this prestigious competition i.c.w. local engineer Stantec. The design is based on three core values and design principles: the bridge as connector, bridge as neighbourhood, and the bridge as waterfront.

THE BRIDGE AS CONNECTOR
The bridge connects the cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento both on a physical and on a community level by creating a new public space over the river. It is a unique location connecting Sacramento and West Sacramento high above the water and offering panoramic views over the two cities.

THE BRIDGE AS NEIGHBOURHOOD
To stimulate sustainable and healthy living, pedestrians and cyclists are at the heart of the design concept. By separating the pedestrian and bike lanes from the car traffic, two almost separated bridges are formed that come together at the centre of the bridge. The bridge becomes a new public route over the delta: a neighbourhood friendly place that contributes to a healthy communities.

THE BRIDGE AS WATERFRONT
The best way to enjoy the water is by foot or by bike. We contribute to the redevelopment of the waterfront by focusing on the pedestrians and cyclists. The curved shape of the pedestrian bridges is derived from the existing bike and pedestrian trails along the waterfront. We activate and integrate the surrounding delta landscape to create a spectacular civic amenity.
