Sacramento Delta Bridge

Delta river Canopy

The Sacramento Delta Bridge is strongly intertwined with the surrounding landscape, the nearby neighbourhoods, and the different users for a healthy urban living environment. The curved shape of the bicycle and pedestrian bridge is a continuation of the existing paths along the waterfront. The surrounding delta landscape has been fully activated and integrated to create a special attraction for the cities.

Exploring City Characteristics

The Sacramento Delta Bridge is a catalyst for future developments to create a liveable and sustainable urban fabric in California. The design responds to the existing qualities of the site, including the waterfront of the river delta and the two cities of West Sacramento and Sacramento. The bridge builds on the existing qualities of these cities, such as the unique number of trees per inhabitant, the relaxed atmosphere, and the pleasant outdoor climate, and puts (West) Sacramento on the map by staying true to this distinct character.

Connecting the Delta

The Sacramento Delta Bridge connects the cities of West Sacramento and Sacramento not only in a physical sense but also at a community level. The bridge is strongly intertwined with the surrounding landscape, the nearby neighbourhoods, and the various users for a healthy urban living environment. The bridge forms a new public space over the river. It is a unique location that connects Sacramento and West Sacramento high above the water while providing panoramic views of the two cities. The best way to connect to the Delta is on foot or by bike. By taking this as a starting point, a contribution is made to the redevelopment of the waterfront. The curved shape of the bicycle and pedestrian bridge is a continuation of the existing paths along the waterfront. The surrounding delta landscape has been fully activated and integrated to create a special attraction for the city.

Creating Community

To encourage sustainable and healthy communities, pedestrians and cyclists are at the heart of the design. Separating them from car traffic creates two almost separate bridges that meet in the middle. The bridge will be a new public route across the delta: a place for the neighbourhood that actively contributes to a healthy lifestyle.
