ARCHITECTURE NOW #9

Can architects build happiness? This was the main question of the 9th edition of Architecture Now. Michel Schreinemachers showed that the Zalige bridge connects the inhabitants of Nijmegen and their surroundings. The bridge let them experience the river in a playful way.

CHANGING NATURE OF WORK

SMART WORKSPACE DESIGN SUMMIT

Marijn Schenk discussed the co-working phenomenon in relation to B. Amsterdam during the Smart Workspace Design Summit.

The SWDS is a two-day experience-based event to rethink the future of workspaces. The other participants to the panel discussion were Bas Van Veggel (B.Amsterdam) en Wybo Wijnbergen (WeWork).

BRIDGES AS SOCIO-CULTURAL PRACTICES

INTERNATIONAL FOOTBRIDGE CONFERENCE BERLIN

During the International Footbridge Conference Berlin, Michel Schreinemachers spoke about bridges that connects. The conference paper focuses on two award-winning examples because of their socio-cultural context: the Zalige bridge in Nijmegen and the Vlotwatering bridge in Monster.

CONNECTING CITY - Mediterranean Landscapes and UrbanLab

MAZARA DEL VALLO, SICILY

Marijn Schenk and Bart Reuser were conducting a 3-day workshop in Mazara Del Vallo, Sicily. Together with LOLA Landscape Architecture NEXT reflected on the cultural, spatial and infrastructural context of the city. The outcomes of the workshop were part of a exhibition. The project was initiated by AutonomeForme Architettura and supported by the European Commission.

Michel Schreinemachers discussed the benefits of private clientship at the Academy of Architecture Groningen at January 12th 2010. Main focus was Villa Overgooi with multiple private clients.

Palermo | the making of... dutch villas

The exhibition SICILIAOLANDA II featured the work of young Dutch and Sicilian architects under 40 including NEXT architects. The exhibition was innitiated by EXPA, Palermo. Combined with this Michel Schreinemachers gave a duo lecture together with Nanne de Ru of Powerhouse Company. The development and building proces of both Villa Overgooi and Villa 1 were presented in relation to eachother. This took place at the Kursaal Kalhesa, Foro Umberto I Palermo at Friday December 19ht.

On Monday December 21th Michel Schreinemachers gave a more detailled lecture with a reflection of the work of NEXT from the last 10 years.

Both lectures were by invitation of AutonomeForme.

Bart Reuser participated to the debate about Urban Delopment at Pakhuis de Zwijger. In the Netherlands we are facing a major issue when it comes to housing and Urban Development. By 2050, 700.000 new homes should be built. This calls for a strong cooperation between parties, an integral approach and a strong vision. But who is taking the responsibility?

Moscow Union of Architects

On Tuesday november 10th, NEXT architects attended the official visit of Dutch Minister Timmermans to the Lucky Dutch exhibition in Winzawod, Moscow. Marijn Schenk introduced the exhibition to the minister and, amongst others, the Dutch Ambassador Ron Keller and the director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute Ole Bouman. A lecture by Schenk at the Moscow Union of Architects was attended by a public of about 400 people.

The Lucky Knot in Changsa / CN was nominated by the World Architecture Festival in the category 'Transport'. In Berlin Michel Schreinemachers and Bart Reuser presented the Lucky Knot to the international jury of the festival. The focus was on the cultural context of the Chinese bridge.

BUENOS AIRES INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL OF ARCHITECTURE

URBAN LIVING

Marijn Schenk presented the research and work for BREATHING HOME_START UP HOME, which was part at the exhibition ‘Across Chinese cities - China house vision' at the Venice International Architecture Biennial. Even though people are increasingly moving towards cities, many buildings are still vacant. Can we respond to this problem by using the habitational needs of a new generation of young people?

Urban Life (Stadsleven) is a monthly public programme presented by journalist Tracy Metz about living in cities.
